Boys’ Soccer Rebound Against Kellenberg

Updated on 06/10/2022

By Jr Friar Greg Law
Oct. 25, 2017

On Tuesday, October 17th, the Friars boys’ soccer team defeated Kellenberg by a final score of 3-1. Saint Anthony’s rebounded from a frustrating 1-0 loss to Fairfield Prep on Saturday, October 14th and got back on track.

When Junior right back Will Greco reflected on the victory he said “We came out with intensity, something we’ve struggled to do in the past. The pregame-talk and intense warm-up,” Greco continued, “helped us compete from whistle to whistle.”

The Friars defense was once again very formidable. Senior goalkeeper Rob Leamey had three saves on the day, only allowing one goal. Since October 1st, Leamey has only allowed four goals; meanwhile the offense has scored an impressive twenty-four goals during that time.

On offense, the Friars were able to execute on most of their scoring opportunities after being blanked by Fairfield Prep. They did a tremendous job of distributing the ball with Chad Meyers, Andrew Weltner, and Bryan Sierra all dishing out assists. Michael Algieri, JJ Forster and Aidan Wilson all scored their fourth goals of the season. Algieri noted, “we took a step in the right direction.”

When asked how important the victory was for the team going forward, Junior midfield Michael Hall said, “we played very well and bounced back after a poor performance against Fairfield Prep.” Hall depicted the game vs. Kellenberg as a “turning point,” adding “hopefully we can compete for a state title down the road.”

Tuesday’s victory marked the eighth time this season that the Friars have outscored their opponents by two or more goals.

On Thursday, October 19th, the Friars pummeled St. Dominic’s by a final score of 7-0. Saint Anthony’s will look to keep their offensive momentum going as they will play host to their rival Chaminade on Wednesday, October 25th, 7:00 p.m., in what will be their final matchup St. Anthony’s-Chaminade regular season matchup. Both teams are eager for a victory after an unsatisfying 0-0 draw in their last affair.

No. 16 Molloy rallies, notches draw with No. 4 St. Anthony's

Updated on 06/10/2022

by Laura Amato on Mon. Oct. 9th, 2017

Rosario Troia knew the momentum changed and he was more than ready to prove it.

The Archbishop Molloy senior forward felt the ball land at his feet with just minutes left in regulation and kicked, netting the equalizer as the Stanners notched a 1-1 draw with St. Anthony’s on Monday afternoon.

“I just saw a big pocket of space and attacked it,” said Troia, who knotted up the game on a cross from Michael Perkins in the 85th minute. “We just had to keep up the intensity. I knew a goal or a good opportunity would come.”

It was a come-from-behind performance for the Stanners, who found themselves down early after Matt Barresi got St. Anthony’s on the board in the fifth minute.

The Friars, ranked No. 4 in the Tri-State by News 12 Varsity, took advantage of a Molloy foul as Barresi connected on a rocket of a free kick from nearly 36 yards out.

“I just decided to let it go and it worked out,” Barresi said. “It definitely helps going up early. The team starts to play with more confidence because you know you’re ahead.”

The Friars (9-0-3) continued to pressure throughout the first half, controlling tempo and grabbing every loose ball in the midfield.

Molloy, ranked No. 16 in the Tri-State by News 12 Varsity, was held without a shot on goal in the opening frame as St. Anthony’s back line kept the Stanners on their heels.

“We didn’t play well enough in the first half,” Molloy coach Andy Kostel said. “We didn’t come into the game thinking we could compete with them. Once we figured out we could compete with them, we played well.”

The Stanners (9-1-4) did their best to find a bit of momentum heading into the break, seizing possession and pushing the ball into the attacking third. It was a switch the squad looked to maintain in the second half, but Molloy still struggled to get that one, big opportunity. In fact, the Stanners recorded just three total shots all game.

“It comes back to just keeping up the intensity,” Troia said. “Once you have the will and the heart to score, then the whole team is into that and we can't be stopped.”

St. Anthony’s locked in on defense down the stretch, but the Friars hoped their offense could really break the game open with a handful of chances. The squad’s best chance came in the 77th minute, but Jonathan Lamantia’s shot sailed over the crossbar.

“We had a couple of very good opportunities in the first half and then, I think, we had probably about six or seven in the second half,” St. Anthony’s assistant coach Don Corrao said. “What we told our guys was just to get a couple things sorted out at midfield and up top. We get a little more quality and our future is very bright."

As St. Anthony’s found itself frustrated with almost-there looks, Molloy continued to bring pressure while the clock ticked down and the Friars’ strong back line, finally, cracked. Troia’s goal was the Stanners’ only shot on net all game.

It was a difficult finish for the Friars, but St. Anthony’s refused to focus on the negative. After all, there were chances and, despite the final score, the defense was impressive for much of the game.

“I thought our defensive effort was very, very good today,” Corrao said. “We lacked a little quality at midfield and in the attacking third. It’s hard when you work that hard and you just miss some quality moments to put the game away.”

Molloy, meanwhile, is anxious to hold onto that late-game momentum going forward, looking for a complete-game performance and, maybe, another matchup with the Friars in the CHSAA state tournament.

“I think the draw still means a lot for the team,” Troia said. “St. Anthony’s is always a good team and getting this draw means a lot to us. We played well.”

Barresi finds Gutekunst for St. Anthony’s winning goal

Matt Barresi has a big foot. The St. Anthony’s senior defenseman does not, however, have a big mouth.

“He’s a quiet player. We’re looking for him to take charge more, maybe get him to be a little more vocal,” Friars assistant coach Don Corrao said.

Barresi took charge — quietly — during a critical second-half sequence. Just before a free kick, he told midfielder Nick Gutekunst to run the same play that worked for them two years ago in a junior varsity contest. “It worked again. I even scored the same way,” Gutekunst, also a senior, said of his header off a well-placed long ball from the 50-yard line by Barresi with 30:45 left that gave St. Anthony’s a 1-0 victory over host Kellenberg on Thursday in a CHSAA game.

“We played them for the JV championship our sophomore year and I remembered the play,” said Barresi, who was outstanding on defense all afternoon, sending numerous booming kicks out of harm’s way to thwart the Firebirds’ attack. “Nick likes to run to the far post and I got it to him at the 6-yard line.”

It was Gutekunst’s first goal this season — and Barresi’s third assist — as the Friars (6-0-1 overall, 3-0 in CHSAA) reaped the reward of a more aggressive second half.

“We struggled in the first half and they outworked us,” said Corrao, who is running the team this season as head coach Gene Buonaiuto recovers from a back ailment. “We were more aggressive right from the opening sequence of the second half. Michael Algieri gave us a spark off the bench.”

Algieri, a shifty junior midfielder, nearly converted from close range and helped the Friars apply continuous possession for several minutes that set a second-half tone. The Firebirds (4-3-2, 2-1) had only a couple of scoring chances in the second half. “This is a narrow pitch and it takes getting used to,” Corrao said. “We like a little more room to maneuver.”

On the game-winning goal, Corrao called a play to take advantage of Barresi’s strong right leg. “Any time we have a set piece I think it’s a scoring opportunity,” Corrao said.

Barresi said he noticed that Kellenberg “was a little disorganized” on the play, followed an injury stoppage. “I have the ability to find players on long balls,” he said.

That’s why Gutekunst was confident when he broke free. “We know Matt will get it to us,” he said. “We were struggling to launch balls in the first half and we had moments when we let our foot off the gas.”

That’s when Barresi provided a roadblock to Kellenberg with his long-distance kicks from deep in his own end. “Of course you’d like to possess the ball,” he said, “but if there’s a problem, you just get it out of there.”

Soft words, loud message.

Rob Leamey, Matt Barresi shaping goals for St. Anthony’s soccer

Rob Leamey has a good memory.
The St. Anthony’s senior goalkeeper remembers playing against Matt Barresi when the two were on opposite teams in the Dix Hills soccer league as youngsters.

“His [Barresi’s] team always was the big team — they went to nationals,” Leamey recalled recently. “So when we played them, it was a big to-do.”

Now that they are high school teammates, the big to-do is for the duo to help the Friars claim their first outright CHSAA title since 2009. (St. Anthony’s was a CHSAA co-champion with Chaminade and advanced in the CHSAA state playoffs in 2013 and 2014. However, the Friars have not won an outright league crown in eight years.)

Chaminade has dominated the CHSAA the past two years with back-to-back CHSAA state crowns, but the Flyers graduated nine starters from last season’s title team. Enter the Friars.

“In previous years, it’s been St. Anthony’s and Chaminade, but Kellenberg has been really strong the past couple of years, so it’s going to be interesting,” Leamey said. “Our main objective is to get to that league final.”

St. Anthony’s has the talent to reach the CHSAA final, and win, led by Leamey, who had 12 shutouts last season. The Friars’ defense allowed one goal or fewer in 18 of the team’s 23 games. (St. Anthony’s went 18-2-3 a year ago.) Senior defenders Barresi, Andrew Weltner and Sean Mitchell hope to make Leamey’s job easier

“I have complete confidence in him. I trust him with everything,” Barresi said about Leamey. “It’s almost as if there’s a fifth defender in the back that we can play with that gives us an advantage on the field.”

Chaminade returns just two starters from last year’s title team: senior midfielder Tim de Meij and senior defender John Murphy.

The challenge for the Flyers and coach Mike Gallagher will be how quickly first-year starting seniors and the juniors handle new roles and more playing time.

This could be the year that a third team enters the CHSAA championship mix. Senior defender Giuseppe Coppola, one of the best players in the CHSAA, leads an improving Kellenberg, which could be quite competitive.
